I was just walking on the beach at the end of summer, close to 9/11/01, when I saw a dark shadow near the edge of the dunes. As I approached, this image emerged out of the shadow. I was walking around at the annual Beaverdale fall parade in Des Moines, Iowa, when a friend grabbed me and said, "Make sure to get a picture of Allie in her new band uniform." She pointed out her daughter, and I crossed the street to get a better angle. All of a sudden, the conditions came together to make a photograph rather than a snapshot -- the V of the formation echoed the V pattern gold buttons on the uniform. The orange-red of the tunics screamed fall, and the soft autumn sunshine backlit the scene to give Allie a soft fall glow. Back in the 70's, while on my way to work each day, I would pass the place where Willie lived. One day I stopped -- and soon we became friends. I liked listening to his philosophy on life; and although we were only friends for a short time, Willie was one nice man.
