I was sitting inside one of the numerous temples on the Bagan plain in Myanmar catching a brief respite from the sun. Two novice monks (one pictured here) approached me and in broken English we began a conversation that would continue throughout the day. Just before sunset, we walked toward the Irrawaddy where they asked a fisherman to take us downriver. The fisherman, with a smile, shoved off and cranked up the engine.
